How To Care For Your Sustainable Pima Cotton Sleepwear

Whether you already have a wardrobe arsenal chock full of sustainable sleepwear, or simply want to learn all the information on how to care for Pima cotton before you start adding things to your cart, this textile care guide is for you.

Arguably, organic women's sleepwear is hailed as a durable, premium quality splurge for every eco-conscious consumer out there. But how can you make the most out of your Pima cotton sleepwear? Consider them as a long-term investment; a seasonless piece made to be loved long after it has been received - and it certainly deserves the royal treatment.

Why it’s important to take care of your slow fashion sleepwear?

The sole purpose of buying slow fashion sleepwear ethically made in Peru from 100% organic, premium quality Pima cotton is, well, longevity.

Did you know that on average, consumers throw away 60 per cent on their clothes in the first year? Unfortunately, if this trend continues, over 150 million tonnes of clothing waste will clog landfills by 2050. Everything comes back to buying mindfully. While fast fashion treats clothing as disposable, at The Sleepy Collective, we are firm believers of the oh-so-familiar phrase “quantity over quality”.

This way you won’t only opt for styles that will certainly pass the test of time, but also save natural resources, reduce your carbon footprint, live a minimalistic lifestyle, and save much (much!) money in the process.

How to care for Pima cotton

Do you want your classic, cozy and conscious sleepwear for both adults and children to last even longer? Here is our Pima cotton washing and caring guide:

Machine vs handwashing

When it comes to washing Pima Cotton sleepwear, the old-school way reigns supreme.  It would be best to use cool or slightly warm water to prevent fading and shrinking.  Avoid using fabric softeners; due to the chemicals, clothing will be coated with a chemical layer.

You can use your trusted washing machine to wash Pima cotton, but it would be best to set it to 30°C on the gentle cycle and turn your clothing inside out. Don’t forget to separate your darks and whites accordingly.

How to dry Pima cotton

While air-dring is the best option to make the garment last longer, if you do want to use your machine, make sure to remove the clothing before it is completely dry. Once you take it out, you can go ahead and complete the drying process by it laying flat on a surface.

How to iron Pima cotton

Iron the fabric when it’s still slightly damp. To speed up the process, you can also use steam as needed. If you want to avoid the process altogether, simply air dry it or removing immediately from the machine. It won’t wrinkle, we promise. Luckily, GOTS-certified organic cotton does not require extensive care to thrive - it’s another reason why we absolutely love it.

How to store your sustainable sleepwear to make them last longer

You might be surprised to know that correct storage can really prolong the lifespan of your Pima cotton sleepwear. Organic textiles love cool and dry spaces. Direct sunlight and heat may cause damage. Also, try not to overfill your wardrobe with clothing. They need enough space to “breath” - aren’t we all? This will also effectively prevent them from getting wrinkled or losing their color due to rubbing against each other.
