Interviews with our lovely workers.

Linda - Seamstress
How long have you worked at the factory?
For 3 years
What is your role/responsibilities?
I work as a seamstress
Did you receive training or have any previous sewing experience?
Yes, I followed some sewing and knitting courses.
How has this job been compared to other factory jobs? (In the case that they have worked in
similar)
It is better, since I am on payroll and almost don’t work for extra hours.
Do you only work on Sleepy Collection garments or do you work for other brands?
I work for many brands, but at this time I’m working on baby clothing for The Sleepy Collection.
What is your working schedule? (How many hours/days a week)
I work from Monday to Friday from 8 am to 6 pm, and Saturdays until 1 pm.
Why do you enjoy this job? (What does this job offer you? i.e. allows her to provide for family, is a
safe working environment)
I enjoy my job because it is easy for me and I don’t have to work extra hours and get to see my family
during the day.
Are you aware that this company sells to consumers in Europe? How does that make you feel that
you are part of the reason that quality Peruvian goods are internationally sold?
Yes, I am aware of that, and they sell it in the United States too. That makes me proud of the work I am
doing.

Michael - Seamstress
How long have you worked at the factory?
For 2 years
What is your role/responsibilities?
I work as a seamstress
Did you receive training or have any previous sewing experience?
I learnt to sew with my family 10 years ago. They own a small workshop.
How has this job compared to other factory jobs? (In the case that they have worked in similar)
This is a safe and good place to work. People are nice and we have enough space here. In other jobs, the
spaces were tiny because some jobs took place at the owner’s living room.
Do you only work on Sleepy Collection garments or do you work for other brands?
I work for many brands, but at this time I’m working on baby clothing for The Sleepy Collection.
What is your working schedule? (how many hours/days a week)
I work from Monday to Friday from 8 am to 7 pm, and Saturdays until 1 pm.
Why do you enjoy this job? (or, What does this job offer you? i.e. allows her to provide for family,
is a safe working environment)
Yes, I enjoy it. Not many men do this, and I am one of the few.
Are you aware that this company sells to consumers in Europe? How does that make you feel that
you are part of the reason that quality Peruvian goods are internationally sold?
Yes, I am aware of that.

Lorena - Agent
What is your role in the workshop?
I actually don’t work at the workshop. I own the firm that contacts the foreign brand and
takes care of the whole production process of the garments. I look for the best workshop or factory in
Lima to care of my client’s requests. The workshop receives the fabrics ready to sew, and here they
complete the process of finishing the garment.

What standards does the factory hold in order to ensure that the workers are safe and taken care
of? Are there any certifications they have earned?
In The Sleepy Collection’s case, I chose to work with the workshop because although they are not one
of the biggest factories in town, they take a lot of care of details. All their workers are on payrolls, and
many of them use masks in case they need them and I can tell the owner cares very much for each of
them. The workshop hasn’t earned any certifications yet, because here in Lima they only account for big
factories and my firm usually works with family-based or smaller brands. At this workshop, they work for
brands with very high quality standards while producing smaller batches than other popular labels.

What sets The Sleepy Collection apart from other brands? (i.e. talk about material and where it is
sourced, attention to details, if the garments are made in small batches)
Well, TSC cares very much for the softness of the garments and their designs are almost monochromatic
and very minimal. The organic cotton’s original color –a kind of beige color- doesn’t have to be dyed in
many of the garments, which is something great for the user’s safety and eco standards.

Luz - Workshop owner
What is your role at the workshop?
I own the workshop.

What kind of labels do you work with?
Well, here we only work with very high quality clothing brands. We started out with children’s garments
and now we are also working with women’s clothing. We work with labels like Kate Spade, Vince and The
Sleepy Collection.
What is the main purpose at the workshop?
Our aim is that the garment is perfectly finished, we are very strict with that. We also have special
machines for sewing baby clothes. Our seamstress are very skilled and crafty, they need to have very
special hands to sew such small pieces of clothing.
What differentiates your workshop from others in Lima?
First of all, we guarantee a top of the line product. We also take care of small details like preshrinking the
elastic –if used- so when the user washes the garment it won’t shrink.
